Guwahati: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) is proceeding with its energy switch strategy with a complete focus on low-carbon initiatives and renewable energy. Under its motivated "Project Aspire", the company strategies to invest Rs. 1.7 lakh crore to drive sustainable growth and reach net-zero emissions by 2040.
"A significant portion of this investment will be directed towards a petrochemical plant at the Bina refinery, while the residual funds will focus on refining, city gas distribution, exploration, and green energy projects," said Ashish Gupta, Deputy General Manager, HSSE (Corp.), emphasising the company's major initiatives. He added that BPCL has also combined with Singapore-based M/s Semco to quicken renewable energy and green hydrogen development.
As part of its potential for sustainability, BPCL aims to install 2 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2026 and scale up to 10 gigawatts by 2035. Well-known projects include the installation of floating solar panels at the Kochi Refinery and a 71-megawatt solar plant in Prayagraj.
Moreover, BPCL is strengthening energy security by increasing its infrastructure. The company is improving compressed biogas (CBG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) production, increasing ethanol blending in petrol, and integrating biodiesel into diesel.
BPCL is also planning on establishing 3,400 charging stations for electric vehicles (EV) at its retail outlets and installing rooftop solar panels at 12,500 outlets, covering 50 per cent of its network.

BPCL is increasing its presence in northeast India through partnerships with Oil India Limited and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL). “The Company is cooperating with the Border Roads Organization (BRO) to construct sustainable plastic roads using recycled plastic waste, designed to endure harsh climatic conditions,” said Gupta.
Sustainability remains central to BPCL's operations. The company has achieved zero-waste-to-landfill certification and planted over 10.5 lakh trees. Water conservation initiatives, including rainwater harvesting and sewage treatment plants, are generating substantial water savings.
BPCL is leveraging liberal technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Inspection (VI) for operational efficiency and protection. The U-Fill app offers customers a seamless, operator-free refuelling experience.
BPCL's long-term strategy includes future ventures into green hydrogen and tidal energy. The company remains committed to optimising operations through the Solomon Index, a global benchmark for energy capability.
The company is also increasing revenue streams through increased ethanol blending and petrochemical production. With "Project Aspire," BPCL is positioning itself as a leader in India’s energy transition, balancing novelty, sustainability and energy affordability.
