Kokrajhar: Union Minister Rameswar Teli has announced that the Indian Oil-owned Bongaigaon Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (BRPL) in Assam’s Chirang region will increase its output from 2.7 million metric tonnes (MMT) to 5 MMT per year.

Out of the 1,200 bighas needed for the expansion, the Bodoland Territorial Council, headed by Pramod Boro, has already allocated 500 bighas, he said at the closing ceremony of the first Bodoland Knowledge Festival on Thursday. In order to speed up the expansion project, he pleaded with the committee to allot the last piece of property that is needed.
“The growth of BRPL will not only increase the refinery's capacity but also create a significant amount of job opportunities and help the local economy,” said Teli, the union's state secretary for petroleum.

According to Teli, the Numaligarh Refinery in Assam has already authorised Rs 1.9 crore as part of its corporate social responsibility.

The Bodoland Territorial Region will soon have 10 more gas pumps installed by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, he added, and the petroleum minister has already started the survey for their placement.

The ministry will also build an LPG bottling factory in the Komardanga neighbourhood of the Chirang district of the BTR for a price of Rs 500 crore, for which the necessary acreage has already been allocated.

According to him, this will build a centre for holding 10,57,352 MT of gas and serve neighbouring areas.
