Numaligarh-Gohpur tunnel expected to improve connectivity, tourism
Guwahati: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced Assam’s first underwater tunnel to be constructed between Numaligarh and Gohpur at an estimated cost of Rs 6,000 crore.
This landmark project will be the first railroad tunnel under the Brahmaputra in northeast India. The tenders for the project are set to open next month.
Sarma, while making the announcement, said he had once dreamt of such an underwater tunnel in Assam. But he was unsure of its feasibility. He informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now given the green signal to proceed with the construction.
He added that the tunnel would further connect the north and south banks of the Brahmaputra.
Sarma emphasised that the decision to construct the underwater tunnel was initiated after consultations with the Centre.
The underwater tunnel is expected to bring about a transformational change in transportation infrastructure and provide substantial benefits to the region, including enhanced trade and commerce opportunities and tourism boost.
Currently, crossing the Brahmaputra requires the use of ferries or bridges, which can be time-consuming and prone to disruptions during monsoon season when the river swells.
With the tender process set to commence in July, the project is expected to gain momentum, and the construction phase will mark a significant milestone for Assam's transportation infrastructure.
