Assam’s Directorate of Fisheries takes major step against Formalin Adulteration

In a significant move to combat formalin adulteration in fish, the Fishery Department of Assam organized a comprehensive workshop on August 21, 2024, focusing on the use of the Formalin Test Kit (K137). The workshop took place in the Conference Hall of the Directorate of Fisheries, Assam.

Dr. Bhagaban Kalita, the nodal officer overseeing the initiative, was at the heart of the preparations.  The goal was clear, to equip district and sub-divisional fisheries officials with the tools and knowledge necessary to detect and manage formalin contamination.
The event featured prominent resource persons from the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT), Cochin. Dr. Zynudheen, Head of Department and Principal Scientist, along with Dr. Martin Xavier, Senior Scientist, and Dr. Aneesh KV, Technical Officer, led the demonstration of the Formalin Test Kit (K137). Their expertise provided valuable insights into the effective application of the kit for detecting formalin in fish.

Senior officers from the Directorate of Fisheries, Assam, hosted the workshop, which saw active participation from District Fisheries Development Officers (DFDOs), Sub-Divisional Fisheries Development Officers (SDFDOs), and Fisheries Development Officers (FDOs) from various districts.

The workshop aimed to enhance the capacity of local fisheries officers in identifying and addressing formalin contamination in fish. Attendees were provided with Formalin Testing Kits (K137) and brochures detailing the kit’s usage and benefits.

This initiative underscores the Fishery Department’s commitment to ensuring the safety and quality of fish products in Assam, reinforcing efforts to safeguard public health and uphold food safety standards.
