Assam's carbon-free Deroi Tea receives patent registration

Guwahati: Deroi Innovations Private Limited, with its office based in Lokhra, Guwahati, has successfully registered a patent for its innovative tea processing technology.

“We are excited about the new beginning where we can mention that Unblended Whole Leaf Tea from Deroi Tea is made using our patented technology,” said co-founder Surya Prakash Borthakur.

In an interview with Business North East, Borthakur described the filing of the patent as "a long and arduous task" as it entails several steps which require drafting the patent specification that includes "a detailed description of the technology and process.”

Initially, Borthakur consulted the Assam Science, Technology, and Environment Council (ASTEC) and several patent attorneys but did not enlist their services. Eventually, he approached the Indian Chamber of Commerce, which connected him with a partner patent attorney who assisted in filing the patent and managing the legal proceedings.

Reflecting on his patent journey, Borthakur recalled, “I started drafting the patent as early as March 2022. After several iterations, the final application was filed on June 29, 2022. The patent was granted on June 21, 2024. We were fortunate to complete the examination process in 2 years as it sometimes takes more than 5-6 years.”

Deroi Tea's Assam Heritage Black Tea is a 100 percent natural, unblended whole-leaf black tea made from the finest tea leaves in Assam. It is produced using a proprietary Carbon-Free Tea Processing Technology, which prevents the tea from being exposed to carbon emissions. The tea has a strong aroma and can be enjoyed with or without natural sweeteners.

Deroi Tea uses only the tender two leaves and a bud, the most nutritious part of the tea plant, for its tea. Assam Heritage Black Tea is rich in natural caffeine, reduces cell damage, and has anti-inflammatory properties. It is all-natural with no added artificial flavors.

Deroi Tea is made in a single facility and is reportedly sourced from a single garden in Assam. Each pouch is hand-packed, inspected, and sent directly to the customer.
