Guwahati: Assam’s Agricultural Minister Atul Bora has said the state government has plans to start a new ‘White Revolution’ by working closely with dairy farmers in a bid to drastically improve output.

Bora’s comments came during the celebration of the National Milk Day last Sunday (November 26) to commemorate the birth anniversary of Verghese Kurien, known as the ‘Father of the White Revolution.’ The celebration, held at the Veterinary College playground in the Khanapara area of Guwahati, was attended by 5,000 dairy farmers.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, opined that hosting the National Milk Day in Guwahati would give“significant impetus” to the government’s efforts to expand the dairy industry.

Nationally, India’s dairy industry, one of the most important sectors of the country, has been growing at a steady rate. In 2022-2023, milk production increased by 4 percent to 230.58 million tonnes, the central government said.

Union cabinet minister of fisheries, animal husbandry, and dairying Parshottam Rupala highlighted this growth in dairy production on X (formerly Twitter).

Earlier this year, Rupala said that the dairy sector is expected to grow at more than 6% in 2023-24. According to Rupala, milk production has witnessed an annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.1%.in the last eight years. According to the minister, per capita milk availability in 2022-2023 reached 459 grams.

According to German data gathering platform Statista, India ranks behind the European Union (EU) and the US as the third largest producer of cow’s milk in the world.
