Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 3 told Business North East that “there is no upper limit" as funding to combat floods in the state are concerned.

The Indian government provided Rs 1300 crores for the state of Assam. “Even 100 crores was not spent so far as it was not required. There is no problem for us for spending for public”.

Among states in the country, Assam has been hit hardest by monsoons this year. On Wednesday, the local disaster management authority reported that 46 flood-related deaths have been reported in the state.

The flood situation is expected to improve within this week if no fresh rainfall occurs. The cabinet has decided to complete the assessment of damage caused by the floods by August 15 and provide compensation to affected people.

Several ministers have been assigned to camp for three days in affected districts to ensure immediate relief and rehabilitation. They will visit various districts to provide immediate relief and rehabilitation.

The government is also aiming to sanction funds for the repair of damaged infrastructure, including educational institutions, anganwadi centers, roads, and embankments, so that they can restore them to their earlier form by March next year.

Sarma expressed hope that adequate measures can prevent disease outbreaks after floodwater recedes. He noted that sharing information and coordination with Arunachal Pradesh has helped deal with the situation to some extent. The only solution to the flood problem is to store excess water in reservoirs, as suggested by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
