Guwahati: An extensive expansion of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) programs reflects the state’s commitment to integrating traditional wellness practices with modern healthcare strategies, aiming to provide comprehensive health services across diverse communities.

In a recent conversation with Business North East, Dr. Indranoshee Das, Director, AYUSH, brought into light that, National Ayush Mission has made notable strides in expandingits healthcare infrastructure. The state now operates a range of programs tailored to various demographics, demonstrating a robust approach to public health.

One of the standout initiatives is the Ayurvidya program for school-going children. This program focuses on raising awareness about healthy lifestyles, instilling good habits from an early age. For pregnant women and new mothers, the Sauproja program offers essential support, ensuring better health for both mothers and their infants. Additionally, the Jhivodhara program addresses the needs of specially-abled individuals and is currently active in 6 districts, providing specialized care and support.

The state’s healthcare network is further strengthened by the establishment of 78 AYUSH (OPD) co-location centers, which are integrated into existing healthcare facilities. There are also 18 AYUSH wings, each functioning similarly to district hospitals, enhancing the state’s capacity to deliver specialized health care. In addition, Assam is home to two 50-bed AYUSH hospitals—located in Goalpara and Majuli. In addition to these the work is ongoing to estblish 100 nos of Ayush Dispensaries .These facilities are managed under the National Ayush Mission, ensuring high standards of care and accessibility.

AYUSH’s commitment to holistic health extends beyond traditional healthcare facilities. The state has established yoga wellness centers in 31 central and district jails, where monthly health camps are conducted. These camps are designed to address both physical and mental health needs of inmates, promoting overall well-being within the correctional system.

The focus on elderly care is also notable, with over 250 geriatric camps organized, benefiting more than 8,000 senior citizens. These camps provide essential health services and support, catering specifically to the needs of the elderly population.

The AYUSH mission in Assam has recently introduced two innovative programs that underscore its commitment to comprehensive health care. The Prevention and Control of Musculoskeletal Disorders is a national program aimed at addressing and mitigating musculoskeletal issues, a growing concern in public health. This program focuses on prevention strategies and management techniques to improve quality of life for those affected by musculoskeletal disorders.

Another new initiative, AYUSHGRAM, promotes daily routine improvements to foster a healthier lifestyle. This program emphasizes the importance of disciplined routines in enhancing overall health and well-being. At present, the implementation of these programs is underway in one district, as stated by Dr. Indranoshee Das, Director of AYUSH to business northest.

In addition to these advancements, the state has set up 500 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, staffed by 500 community health officers. These facilities play a crucial role in delivering health services at the community level, further supporting the state’s holistic health approach.

The expanded AYUSH mission marks a significant step towards a more integrated and comprehensive healthcare system. By enhancing its infrastructure and broadening the scope of its programs, the state is paving the way for improved public health outcomes and a better quality of life for its residents.
