Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday informed that his government is investing Rs 800 crore to improve road connectivity in tea gardens and building 500 state-of-the-art schools in the regions.

Further, he stated this decision, made during a state cabinet meeting, marks a substantial development initiative aimed at enhancing the connectivity and quality of life in tea garden communities. Each of the 800 tea gardens will receive Rs 1 crore for road construction.

In addition to the road development initiative, the Assam government is also making strides in the education sector. As part of the Chief Minister's Independence Day pledge, the government has been focused on renovating and modernising Assamese medium schools across the state. With an investment of Rs 7.5-8 crore per school, the goal is to revamp 500 existing schools to bring them up to modern standards.

So far, 252 schools are under renovation, and today, the cabinet sanctioned work for an additional 126 schools, bringing the total to 526 schools. This progress aligns with the Chief Minister's commitment to renovate 126 schools annually, ensuring the target of 500 renovated schools is met by next year. These renovations aim to transform existing schools to match the quality and infrastructure of newly built institutions.

The Chief Minister highlighted ongoing work at various schools, including Raidhar Bora, Sonaram Higher Secondary School, Arjya Vidyapeeth, Jalukbari FSS, Cotton Collegiate, and Kamrup Academy. The overarching goal is to complete the modernization of 500 schools within this term and upgrade an additional 1,000 schools in the next term. Ultimately, the plan is to modernise all 4,000 Assamese medium schools, even if it requires a larger budget.
