New Delhi: Airtel's data centre division Nxtra, a top data centre company in India, has become part of the RE100 initiative and pledged to use entirely renewable electricity. Nxtra, a flagship global initiative led by Climate Group in partnership with CDP, may be unfamiliar to some.

By doing so, Nxtra is now the sole data center company in India committed to RE100, making it the 14th Indian firm to reach this goal, demonstrating its dedication to sustainability and goal of achieving net zero by 2031.

The company has raised its utilization of renewable energy and has secured 422,000 MWh of renewable energy so far. In the fiscal year 2023-24, Nxtra reduced approximately 156,595 tCO2e emissions by utilizing renewable energy from Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and Captive Solar Rooftop Plants.

We are a brand that cares about the environment and has been steadily embracing clean energy options. Nxtra by Airtel's CEO, Ashish Arora, stated that they are making good progress towards their net-zero goals for 2031 and are pleased to join the RE100 initiative with a pledge for 100% renewable electricity.

Nxtra claims to have the biggest network of data centers in India, consisting of 12 major and 120 edge data centers throughout the country. Data centers are often ignored for their emissions despite their high energy consumption. It is motivating to witness Nxtra leading the way in embracing top practices to lessen its carbon footprint.

Nxtra's effort to acquire sustainable energy for its operations will serve as an appropriate model for data center firms looking to speed up the transition to a more environmentally friendly future. Atul Mudaliar, Director of Systems Change - India, expressed his pleasure in welcoming Nxtra by Airtel to RE100.
