Guwahati: Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati has got an impressive seventh ranking in the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) 2024 and ninth in overall ranking of educational institutions in India.

IITG is also among the top ten institutions for research - ranked number 10 in the Research category, underscoring its consistent performance in multiple domains.

While it trails IIT-Madras, IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Kharagpur and IIT-Roorkee, but it is ahead of all relatively newer IITs like Varanasi, Indore and even IIT-Hyderabad, according to the NIRF rankings.

The NIRF rankings align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes the significance of accreditation and rankings for all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in India. This year witnessed participation from 6,517 unique HEIs, with a total of 10,845 applications across various categories.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan lauded the IITs for achieving a 20 percent increase in gender parity in admissions, a significant milestone in the history of these premier institutions. For the first time, the Government of India has placed a strong emphasis on admitting students passionate about sports, without compromising on academic merit.

This move is seen as a pivotal step toward fostering a more inclusive and well-rounded academic environment.

Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, expressed his satisfaction with the institute's sustained ranking.

“Maintaining our position in the NIRF rankings is a significant achievement that highlights the unwavering dedication and relentless efforts of the entire IIT Guwahati community, including faculty, students, and staff,” said Jalihal. The IITG director said this sustained ranking reflects the quality of IITG’s academic programs, the strength of its research output, and continuous efforts to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all.
In its ninth edition, the NIRF evaluates institutions based on five broad parameters: teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.

On the international front too, IIT Guwahati has made significant strides, with its subjects in Data Science and Petroleum Engineering ranking among the top 100 globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024. The institute achieved 87th rank globally in the SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) category in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2024.

Notably, three leading educational institutions from the Northeast— IIT Guwahati, Gauhati University (GU), and NIT Silchar— have been highlighted for their contributions to higher education in the region.

Among other northeastern universities, Gauhati University (GU) emerged as the highest-ranked state university from the region, securing the 40th place in the Universities category. It was followed by Tezpur University (Assam) at the 69th rank, while Mizoram University held the 77th position, reflecting the growing academic excellence of the Northeast in the national landscape.

It may be mentioned that recently, several incidents came of student and faculty suicide. Business North East asked about the reason but nothing was conveyed to the query.
