Guwahati: The Food Safety Commissionerate under the Department of Health and Family Welfare of Assam on Friday organized a World Food Safety Day celebration at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati.  Each speaker emphasized the responsibility of the government and the people to eat safe food with proper nutrition and develop a better lifestyle.

Traditionally, there was almost no challenge of unsafe food when farming was done using manure. But, with agricultural mechanization, food security is now threatened by uncontrolled application of various chemical fertilizers, pesticides, etc. Therefore, public awareness plays a special role in consuming safe food and each speaker urged everyone to be "aware" in this regard, officials said.

They also said that people should be more aware of the proper use of refrigerators. Secretary Barnali Sharma advocated the setting up of kitchen gardens in every household.

The meeting also read out an oath to raise awareness about safe food consumption. The meeting was welcomed by food analyst Anupam Gogoi. The meeting was attended by several key dignitaries from the state.

This year’s theme underlined the importance of being prepared for food safety incidents, no matter how mild or severe they can be.
