Shillong: The Byrnihat-Shillong Railway project, sanctioned in 2011, remains unfinished 13 years later due to persistent challenges from local pressure groups and land acquisition issues.

Despite numerous meetings between state and central governments, the project has not progressed, as confirmed by a North East Frontier Railway official to Business North East. "We also need land acquisition from the Meghalaya government," said the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of North East Frontier Railways.

The Byrnihat-Shillong new line project, which spans 108.4 km, is a critical part of the Capital Connect Project aiming to link all northeastern capitals. The anticipated cost of the project is Rs. 8324 crores. “The project involves constructing 100 major bridges, 51 minor bridges, and 31 tunnels,” the CPRO added.

The Byrnihat-Shillong Railway Project aims to enhance connectivity, promote tourism, and boost economic activities in the region. However, it faces several hurdles, including land acquisition issues, environmental concerns, and opposition from local communities. The project is divided into different phases, starting with the Byrnihat-Lailad section and then moving to the Lailad-Shillong section.

The expected benefits of the project are substantial. Improved railway connectivity is projected to drive economic growth, facilitate the movement of goods, attract investment, and create job opportunities. Easier access to Shillong and its surrounding areas is likely to enhance tourism, benefit local businesses, and promote cultural exchange.

The Indian government has demonstrated its commitment to the project by allocating funds and addressing stakeholder concerns through dialogue and negotiations. The project's timeline remains uncertain, but stakeholder involvement is crucial for its successful implementation.

The Byrnihat-Shillong Railway Project holds significant potential for transforming the connectivity and economic landscape of the northeastern region. Despite the challenges, it remains a critical infrastructure initiative with substantial long-term benefits.
