Tripura to start Mushroom villages.

The Tripura government, with an aim to make beneficiaries financially strong, has planned to set up “Mushroom Villages” in four agricultural sub-divisions of West Tripura district. They are planning to provide an assistance to around 11000 families in the West Tripura district for mushroom cultivation under the project in the current financial year, an official sources said.

Out of this 11000 families, as many as 3,500 families are in Jirania agriculture sub-division, 2500 families in Dukli agriculture subdivision, 3,300 families in Mohanpur agriculture sub-division and another 17, 000 families in Hezamara agriculture sub-division will be brought under mushroom cultivation through this initiative. The government will arrange facilities to distribute quality mushroom seed to the beneficiary family.

According to an official report, assistance has already been provided to 1,700 families of Hezamara agriculture sub-division and 500 families in Dukli agriculture sub-division.

The government started this project understanding mushroom’s potential to generate good income in a short period.

Over the past few years, mushroom cultivation has gained immense popularity in the Northeast. From Nagaland to Assam to Meghalaya, locals, especially women, have realised the true potential of mushrooms in alleviating chronic poverty witnessed in several rural areas. Again, the cultivation is boosting the income of educated youth in Tripura and is encouraging more. In entire Tripura, there are many success stories due to mushroom cultivation. On an average a farmer can earn Rs. 30, 000 to Rs. 40, 000 per month from the sale of the produce.

The Tripura government’s plan to achieve sustainable livelihood goals for the villagers is need of the hour. The government has also set up ‘bio-villages’ in five villages. This initiative is taken to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities in rural areas.

Villagers can choose from multiple eco-friendly components for obtaining maximum returns in terms of money as well as other indices such as comfort and happiness.
