Agartala, September 27: The Tripura Government has made significant strides in public procurement, purchasing materials worth ₹679 crore through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal.

This achievement was highlighted by Abhishek Singh, Secretary of the Power Department, in an discussion with Business Northeast.
Launched on August 9, 2016, by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, GeM is a transformative online platform that streamlines government procurement processes across India. It was established on the recommendations of a Group of Secretaries, with a vision from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to create a dedicated digital marketplace for government organizations, departments, and public sector units (PSUs) to procure goods and services efficiently.

Singh emphasized the positive impact of GeM on Tripura's procurement activities. "In the financial year 2023-24 alone, the state government procured materials worth ₹275 crore through the GeM portal," he stated.

Moreover, the portal has enabled the active participation of 904 Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) from Tripura, fostering local entrepreneurship. As of this year, 804 buyers and an impressive 18,017 sellers are registered on the platform, including 4,155 vendors who joined in FY 2023-24 alone.

The scale of government procurement through GeM extends nationwide. Singh revealed that in the last financial year, government offices across India collectively purchased goods worth ₹4 lakh crore. Among the northeastern states, Tripura stands second only to Assam in government procurement through GeM, further underscoring the state's commitment to digital governance and transparent procurement.

This milestone represents a step forward for Tripura, showcasing its growing participation in India's digital transformation and its commitment to efficient, transparent public procurement practices.

Earlier on 2023, Tripura Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy said that Tripura has emerged as the ‘best performer’ in the implementation of E-procurement among the Northeastern States.

Finance Minister of State Singha Roy said a national workshop on E-procurement was organized at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi on March 27, 2023 with the joint initiative of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
In the workshop, Tripura was selected as the best performer among the NE states for the implementation of e-procurement.
