The Northeast India Scientific and Entrepreneurial Diaspora (NEISED), a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing socio-economic issues in Northeast India, is set to host a one-day workshop titled "Semiconductor Ecosystem: Awareness and Opportunities for Northeast India" at Jagiroad College on October 25. This workshop aims to engage students, academicians, researchers, and industry experts through a series of keynote addresses, panel discussions, and competitions.

Key highlights of the event include a keynote address by a leading expert from the semiconductor industry and academia, discussions on opportunities within the semiconductor sector, an overview of industry technologies, and entrepreneurial pathways. Additionally, model and poster competitions for students will foster innovation and active participation, attracting significant interest from both academia and industry.

The executive committee for the workshop includes Dr. Bhaben Ch. Neog, Dr. Paramananda Saikia, Dr. Y. Jayanta Singh, and Dr. Pabitra Nath, while the convenors are Sanjeev Hazarika, Dr. Achyut Bora, Dr. Saurov Mahanta, and Mriganka Gogoi. NEISED encourages participants to reach out for further information or discussions at paramasd@yahoo.com.

Sanjeev Hazarika, one of the convenors, spoke to Business North East, stating, “We have formed a society with partners from all over the world. We have teamed up with many scientific organizations and companies involved in the semiconductor domain. This one-day workshop is primarily to create awareness among students and faculty of colleges and give them an opportunity to network with industry leaders.” He added, “There will be many technical talks, panel discussions, and insights on career opportunities in the semiconductor field.”

Hazarika also mentioned that for the event, the VLSI Society of India is the organizing partner. Oil India Limited and Numaligarh Refinery Limited are among the sponsors supporting the workshop.

NEISED emphasizes that support and participation in this workshop will help raise awareness about the semiconductor industry and its potential for creating employment opportunities, ancillary industries, and start-ups in the region. The organization focuses on leveraging scientific knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit to tackle pressing issues in Northeast India, such as unemployment and limited access to education and technology. NEISED strives to create a supportive ecosystem for research, entrepreneurship, and skill development.

"As the theme of the workshop is awareness creation in a technology sector, we are looking for sponsors related to technology, education, coaching and training, and skill development. Our sponsors will have a stall to display their products and services, and they will also be able to play 2-3 minute video clips on our audiovisual medium during the session breaks. The cost will be Rs 15K. Sponsors can send 2 representatives."

More than 500 participants from technical and general colleges in Assam and other northeastern states, as well as industry leaders from the semiconductor industry, are expected to attend.

In related news, on June 3rd, Assam inaugurated a significant semiconductor project worth Rs. 27,000 crore in Jagiroad. The event was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Tata Sons Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran, and other dignitaries. The project aims to establish India as a leader in semiconductor manufacturing and is expected to produce a huge volume of packaged chips daily. Approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the initiative signifies a major advancement for the state, promising job creation, economic growth, and numerous opportunities. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commended Prime Minister Modi and Ratan Tata for their support, emphasizing Assam's potential to generate employment through its skilled workforce. The plant is expected to be completed within 18 months, targeting completion by 2026. The event also highlighted the involvement of several Northeast institutions in developing talent for the semiconductor industry.
