Agartala: Tripura's Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury announced that the state government has procured more than two lakh metric tons of paddy directly from farmers at Minimum Support Price (MSP) since 2018. This initiative has involved an estimated expenditure of Rs 382 crore.
Speaking at the launch of this year's paddy procurement drive in Jolaibari, Chowdhury highlighted the government's commitment to supporting farmers and ensuring they receive fair prices for their produce. He set this year's procurement target at 15,000 metric tons, aiming to exceed previous efforts despite challenges faced.
Chowdhury also emphasized the impact of middlemen on the procurement process, urging farmers to await the government's annual drive to secure better prices for their crops. He criticized the previous Left government for exploiting farmers and failing to implement effective procurement policies.
Tripura's Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath, present at the event, underscored the state's broader agricultural strategies. "These include diversifying crops such as pineapple, jackfruit, lemon, and betel nuts across thousands of hectares, alongside efforts to establish market linkages both nationally and internationally," he said.
Nath highlighted achievements in pineapple exports, noting that Tripura has shipped over 12,000 metric tons of the fruit outside the state, with 33 metric tons reaching foreign markets.
