Agartala: The Tripura agriculture department has designated Rs 14.58 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), at Rs 8500 per hectare as compensation to farmers whose crops have been affected by cyclone.

Cyclone ‘Remal’ left over 550 houses damaged and over 2,500 people homeless in the state, according to reports. The state's power transmission network also sustained extensive damages.

Moreover, the Tripura horticulture department has approved Rs 7.38 crore for 20,078 farmers whose tomato harvests were ruined by the cyclones, as part of the SDRF scheme.

Nath stated that the department has already sought additional compensation for farmers affected by heavy rains on May 28 through the SDRF scheme. Nath emphasized the attention received by the state's produce at a buyer-seller conference in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, which greatly benefited agricultural trade.

The Tripura government plans to hold more conferences in the state to boost agricultural trade.

Emphasizing the popularity of Tripura's tasty pineapples, including the officially recognized "queen" type, Nath revealed that 30 tons of Kew-type pineapples were sent to Bangalore on Wednesday, boosting trade opportunities.

Nath also declared the recruitment of 59 Grade-1 agriculture officers.
