Guwahati: The Northeast Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC) has embarked on a mission to provide free training and essential tools to local craftsmen. This endeavour, supported by funding from the Northeast Eastern Council (NEC), aims to equip artisans with the skills needed to craft a variety of handmade bamboo products.

Business North East recently caught up with one of the senior officials associated with the project to learn how it stands to benefit indigenous craftsmen and women.

P. Mali, an assistant manager at NECBDC, explained, "The program has enrolled 27 artisans representing diverse communities across the region, participants undergo rigorous training sessions focusing on the art of creating bamboo furniture, decorative items, and other handicrafts. Beyond technical skills, the program also emphasizes entrepreneurship, preparing artisans to launch their own businesses upon completion of the training. Earlier this week, we wrapped up a one-month training to help artisans.”

"The initiative is designed to empower people in the Northeast to become self-sufficient," Mali added, highlighting NECBDC's commitment to preserving traditional craftsmanship while promoting sustainable livelihoods. By harnessing the abundant bamboo resources indigenous to the region, the initiative not only supports economic growth but also contributes to environmental sustainability.

Nearly two-fifths of India's bamboo stock is concentrated in the northeastern region. However, bamboo's contribution to the states' economic development remains subdued. The NECBDC, which is an implementing agency for the North East Regional Bamboo Mission, hopes to change that.

NECBDC's efforts have received widespread support from governmental and non-governmental organizations. Through collaborative partnerships, the council aims to empower artisans, ensuring they emerge as integral contributors to their communities' cultural and economic landscapes.

Mali added, "As NECBDC continues to expand its reach and impact, the council remains dedicated to empowering Northeast artisans through education and resource provision. By equipping artisans with the necessary skills and tools, NECBDC is laying the groundwork for a brighter future where local talent thrives and communities prosper."
