Shillong: Dr Akbaruddin Ahmad, chairman of Policy Research Centre in Dhaka, Bangladesh, has emphasised the need for the youth in the North East to think out of the box and create jobs instead of searching for jobs.

“One does not need a lot of money to start a venture. All an individual requires is a good idea and that costs more than anything else,” said Ahmad, who was in the city to attend a seminar on ‘Sustainable Development: Business Policy and Management Practices’ at Shillong College.

Ahmad also asserted that the tourism sector will witness a boom in the North East. “There is not much scope for heavy industries here but tourism can be a game changer,” he said.

However, he was critical of India’s visa policy and emphasised that the country should start visa on arrival system.

“Bangladeshis are prolific travellers but the delay in issuing a visa is discouraging,” Ahmad pointed out, adding that the North East would stand to gain if the visa policy becomes tourist-friendly.
