Guwahati: Tata Sons' cutting-edge semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Jagiroad, Assam, will create over 27,000 direct and indirect job opportunities, N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of the company, said. The new facility will specialize in key platform technologies such as wire bond, flip chip, and integrated systems packaging (ISP), which are vital for automotive, communications, computing, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
"Semiconductor assembly and testing is a critical part of the semiconductor value chain where wafers manufactured by semiconductor fabs are assembled or packaged and then tested before they are finally used in the desired product", Chandrasekaran said during the foundation stone laying ceremony on Wednesday.
Chandrasekaran stated, "The new facilities being developed by Tata Electronics will introduce cutting-edge semiconductor technologies, advanced skill sets, and talent, along with a network of semiconductor manufacturing suppliers and ecosystem partners. This will contribute to the foundational development of an indigenous semiconductor ecosystem in India."
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through X (formerly Twitter) termed it a "landmark day for Assam and North East."
Chandrasekaran also said that the foundation stone laid today for Tata's projects in Dholera (Gujarat) and Jagiroad (Assam), spans an area of 2,500 km. These semiconductor manufacturing hubs are expected are altogether poised to generate over 100,000 skilled jobs, he added.
Randhir Thakur, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Electronics, thanking the governments for their support, said it was a significant boost to their historic journey of 'India's Techade: Chips for Viksit Bharat.' Thakur also said that this move will contribute substantially to India's technological advancement and economic development.
