Tata Power, DGPC partner to set up 600 MW hydro project in Bhutan

New Delhi: Tata Power and DGPC have teamed up to work on a hydropower project with an expected cost of Rs 6,900 crore.Tata Power announced on Wednesday that the Khorlochhu Hydropower Project, with a capacity of 600 MW, will be constructed on the Kholongchhu river in eastern Bhutan. The project's clean energy will assist in meeting Bhutan's growing electricity needs and support India's shift to renewable energy sources.

Tata Power will invest 40 pc equity in Khorlochhu Hydro Power Ltd, a Public Private Partnership company.Tata Power stated that the project cost is approximately Rs 6,900 crore, which includes financing charges, and it has a construction timeline of 5 years. The company also mentioned that all necessary statutory approvals are in place for the construction to begin.

Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, stated, "This project demonstrates a major advancement in establishing a sustainable energy environment, emphasizing Tata Power's dedication to a more environmentally-friendly future."Dr. Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, Director General of the DGPC, stated that this collaboration is a crucial move for Bhutan's energy stability and economic growth as they aim to achieve a High-Income Gross National Happiness (GNH) Economy by 2034.
