Guwahati: Several Tata Group companies, including Tata AutoComp, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Technologies, and Tata Electronics, have emerged as crucial global suppliers for Tesla. As the American EV giant contemplates expanding into India, these Tata firms are positioning themselves for a more significant role in its supply chain, sources told The Economic Times.

According to industry insiders, Tesla is actively preparing its supplier base in India, anticipating future manufacturing operations in the country. The company’s senior procurement executives have reportedly engaged with multiple suppliers to explore the local production of critical automotive components such as castings, forgings, electronics, and fabricated parts.

Currently, Tata Group firms hold global agreements with Tesla, contributing to India's estimated 2 billion dollars worth of exports to the EV maker in FY24. The discussions indicate that Tesla is keen on shifting parts of its supply ecosystem closer to its production hubs. However, the final course of action will depend on Tesla's decision regarding local manufacturing or contract-based production for the Indian market.

Tesla is closely monitoring government policies, including special incentives and duty waivers, which could influence its India expansion plans. While neither Tesla nor the Tata firms involved have commented officially, sources suggest Tesla enforces strict confidentiality clauses to safeguard its supply chain details.

The components Tesla is expected to source from India include wiring harnesses, electric motors, gearboxes, forged parts, sheet metal, high-value electronics, suspension systems, powertrains, and precision bearings. Tata AutoComp specializes in engineering solutions for EVs, while Tata Technologies manages end-to-end product lifecycle services. TCS contributes circuit board technology, and Tata Electronics is set to supply semiconductor chips once a local manufacturing facility is established.

Tesla may also procure key vehicle control elements from Tata Electronics, such as printed circuit board assemblies for battery management systems, motor controllers, and door controls. These developments signal growing collaboration between Tesla and Indian suppliers, reinforcing the country’s role in the global EV ecosystem.
