New Delhi: Elon Musk-led Starlink is poised to introduce its satellite internet services in India, potentially delivering several terabytes per second of data throughput. With substantial infrastructure already in place, the company is prepared to commence operations as soon as it secures the necessary regulatory approvals, per industry sources.
A report by The Economic Times highlights that Starlink's satellite capacity is expected to be significantly higher than its competitors, estimated to be 80-90 times greater than services offered by Eutelsat-OneWeb and Reliance Jio-SES. These existing providers currently offer data speeds ranging from 30-50 gigabits per second (Gbps), whereas Starlink’s advanced technology promises a much larger bandwidth capacity.
Despite its technological advantage, Starlink is still awaiting approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) before entering India's competitive telecom market—the second-largest in the world.

Meanwhile, rivals Eutelsat-OneWeb and Jio-SES have already secured regulatory clearances and are awaiting spectrum allocation to roll out their services. Industry experts suggest that once Starlink overcomes the regulatory hurdle, it will be well-positioned to cater to both retail and enterprise consumers across India, providing high-speed satellite internet with vast capacity.
