Agartala: Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday inaugurated the Goods and Service Tax (GST) Bhavan here.
During the inauguration, Sitharaman highlighted the positive impact of GST in the northeast region, especially in Tripura. She mentioned that before GST was introduced, Tripura used to receive only Rs 4.21 crore annually as central sales tax collection. However, after the implementation of GST, the state's revenue generation has significantly increased, and in the fiscal year 2022-23, Tripura collected Rs 982.5 crore as interstate GST.
The Union finance minister also encouraged the GST authorities to conduct outreach initiatives with the state government to help small businesses understand the benefits of enrolling for GST. She mentioned that larger companies prefer to deal with GST-registered businesses, creating a need for more small businesses to adopt GST.
The GST Bhavan is a project of the CGST, CX, and Customs Office, Agartala, Guwahati Zone, under the Central Board for Indirect Taxes (CBIC). It has been built at a cost of Rs 28 crore and is equipped with facilities and training space for GST-related issues.
