Gangtok: The government of Sikkim has introduced a plan to tackle overpricing for journeys between Gangtok and Nathula, a popular tourist destination in the Northeast.

According to an official decree issued by C S Rao, principal secretary of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, round-trip taxi fares from Gangtok to Nathula for both standard and luxury vehicles have been standardised at Rs 6,500 and 7,000, respectively, including permit charges. This program, which begins immediately, is intended to assure "equitable pricing" and improve the overall tourist experience, according to the state government.

According to reports in the media, tourist overcharging continues to be a common issue in many holiday destinations, including Sikkim. The government's decision is the result of repeated complaints from tour operators about excessive taxi and permit rates. Stringent action will be taken against individuals or operators found violating the stipulated rates, as per the directives outlined in the official order.

Notably, Offenders may face penalties under various transportation laws and regulations, including the Central Motor Vehicle Act 1988, CMV Rules 1989, and Sikkim Motor Vehicles Rules 1991, enforced by the Transport Department.

For the convenience of dissatisfied visitors, the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department has provided contact information, including phone numbers, for reporting cases of overcharging. This proactive approach indicates the government's commitment to fostering fair and honest tourist practices throughout the region.
