Guwahati: Heavy rains lashed Guwahati, Assam on Monday morning, creating havoc for office and schoolgoers in the city. Water clogging was also reported in many localities of the city. Chandmari, Navin Nagar, Anil Nagar, Bhangagarh, and Hatigaon are some of the areas that have been affected worst.

The situation was further compounded for some as rickshaw pullers, taxis, and bike services charged extra amid the downpour, Business North East has learned. However, both government and private organizations remained open.

Business North East spoke to some officegoers who shared their woes with this platform. “We must go to work despite the harsh weather conditions. How can we not go?", an officegoer shared. A female working professional complained that her clothes were "fully drenched" as soon as she stepped out of her house.

A person from Chandmari locality, who resides in a paying guest (PG) accommodation, said “ I got a fever by wading in the water-clogged streets of Chandmari."

A Rapido bike taxi rider complained that they would not go to inundated places as it could be risky for them, "Even if we reach such places, we might not get fare to return from such locations, which would mean losses", he told BNE.

"I usually travel on my scooter", a resident of Ganeshguri said. “But today, my father had to drop me off in his car."

A Hatigaon resident informed Business North East, “There is immense water logging. Even vehicles had to stop, causing horrific traffic snarls." The same was said by a Kahilipara resident who was unable to reach their office on time due to water-logging.

On June 1, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast that Northeast India is slated to endure fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusts of wind reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph, for the next seven days. Bouts of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall are likely over the next five days.
