The West Assam Milk Producers’ Co-operative Union Ltd. (WAMUL), widely recognised as Purabi Dairy, has announced a remarkable financial performance for the fiscal year 2024-25, achieving a record turnover exceeding Rs 320 crore. This significant milestone represents a substantial 25 per cent year-on-year growth for the leading dairy brand in Northeast India.

Adding to its achievements, Purabi Dairy has also secured two crucial ISO certifications for its key facilities, underscoring its unwavering commitment to quality and food safety. The cooperative’s advanced milk processing plant located at Panjabari, Guwahati, has been awarded the prestigious ISO 22000:2018 certification for food safety management systems. Simultaneously, its cattle-feed plant situated in Changsari has earned the ISO 9001:2015 certification for quality management systems.

The state-of-the-art Panjabari dairy plant, commissioned on March 2, 2024, with support from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) under the World Bank-backed Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project (APART), involved an investment of approximately Rs 49 crore. The certification process for this facility also received support under the APART initiative. The Changsari cattle-feed unit, operational since May 11, 2022, was financed by the Government of Assam through the RIDF-XXIII fund.

Expressing his delight over the company's performance, WAMUL Managing Director Sameer Kumar Parida stated, “We’re immensely proud to have surpassed the Rs 300 crore turnover mark. This growth is a testament to our consistent focus on quality, innovation, and the empowerment of our dairy farmers. The expansion of our product range and a wider distribution network have been instrumental in achieving this success.”

Purabi Dairy witnessed a robust growth of over 16 per cent in its liquid milk sales during FY 2024-25, firmly establishing its position as the largest dairy brand in the Northeast. The cooperative's milk-based products also experienced significant surges in sales, with curd registering a 65 per cent increase, ghee 55 per cent, and both paneer and cream witnessing a 35 per cent growth. The recent introduction of new products such as Purabi Ice Cream and Flavoured Milk has also been met with enthusiastic consumer acceptance.

The brand has also significantly expanded its distribution reach beyond traditional markets, now catering to customers from Tinsukia in the east to Dhubri in the west. Purabi products have also made strong inroads into the North Bank districts, including Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, and Sonitpur.

Looking ahead, Purabi Dairy has set an ambitious target of achieving over Rs 450 crore in turnover for the financial year 2025-26. To support this growth trajectory, WAMUL and NDDB have entered into an agreement to double the processing capacity of the Panjabari plant from 1.5 lakh litres to 3 lakh litres per day. This Rs 100-crore expansion project aims to meet the increasing consumer demand and provide enhanced support to dairy farmers in the region.

Satya Brata Bose, MD of the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (NEDFi), highlighted that the increased processing capacity would enable Purabi Dairy to offer a broader range of products and achieve deeper market penetration, while simultaneously creating more income opportunities for rural milk producers.

With the successful revival of the East Assam Milk Union Ltd. (EAMUL) under the Purabi umbrella, the daily milk procurement has now reached over 1.6 lakh litres from a network of 51,000 farmers across more than 1,300 Dairy Cooperative Societies. Purabi Dairy remains steadfast in its commitment to sustainable practices, rural empowerment, and inclusive growth, with a clear vision of fostering a resilient dairy ecosystem in Assam.
