New Delhi : A senior government official disclosed on Saturday that a total of 208 major infrastructure projects from various ministries, such as roads and railways, amounting to Rs 15.39 lakh crore, have been proposed for approval under the PM GatiShakti initiative.

The Network Planning Group (NPG) endorsed these projects under the PM GatiShakti initiative introduced on October 13, 2021. According to Amardeep Singh Bhatia, Secretary of DPIIT, 208 projects with a total value of Rs 15.39 lakh crore have been evaluated under the initiative. He further stated that using the system has numerous advantages, such as saving substantial time and reducing costs for planning infrastructure projects. The group suggests focusing on a total of 101 road projects, 73 railway projects, 12 urban development projects, and four projects from the oil and gas ministry. The NPG made up of various ministries meets every two weeks to evaluate infrastructure projects for seamless coordination and holistic development in the project area.

The launch of the initiative aimed to create a unified infrastructure for lowering logistics expenses. All transportation and communication infrastructure initiatives with investments exceeding Rs 500 crore must go through the NPG. Approval from the NPG must be obtained before the project can be cleared by either the PIB or the Department of Expenditure within the finance ministry.

The NMP contains more than 1,600 layers of geospatial information, displaying both physical and social infrastructure as well as land records in a single location. It was created to enhance planning speed and design quality in order to maximize the impact of an investment. The NPG includes officials from different ministries/departments that handle connectivity infrastructure, including leaders from the network planning division, to collaboratively plan and integrate proposals. Each of these departments go to the NPG as their first step for approval.
