Per hectare consumption of fertilisers in Punjab at 247.61kg last yr, all-India avg 140kg: Govt

New Delhi: The government reported on Tuesday that the average consumption of fertilisers in India was around 140 kg per hectare in 2023-24, with Punjab consuming 247.61 kg per hectare.

Responding in writing to Rajya Sabha, Anupriya Patel, the Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers, stated that the national average per hectare consumption of nutrients in 2023-24 is approximately 139.81 Kg, while Punjab's per hectare consumption for the same year is about 247.61 Kg.

She was responding to a query about whether Punjab is the top user of fertilizers based on consumption per kilogram per hectare, accounting for 9 percent of the total fertilizer usage in the nation.

Patel mentioned that the Punjab government has stated that there have been no reports or studies of cancer cases in areas of Punjab where there is high usage of phosphate fertiliser.
