Agartala: A major blaze erupted in Agartala's Battala Market in Tripura early Monday morning, resulting in the destruction of 155 shops.

The market, known as the second busiest and largest in the state, suffered extensive damage, with initial reports pointing to an electrical short circuit as the likely cause of the fire.

Upon notification, the Fire and Emergency Services swiftly responded, dispatching nine fire tenders to the scene to contain the blaze and prevent its further spread. According to Battala Market Association Secretary Subhas Das, the affected shops included 130 vegetable vendors, five poultry shops, five wholesale outlets, and 15 grocery stores. The estimated losses are anticipated to exceed Rs 2 crore.

Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha and Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder visited the site in the morning to assess the situation and engage with the affected traders.

Expressing regret over the incident, Chief Minister Saha stated, "It was a very unfortunate incident. A massive fire engulfed a section of Battala market, resulting in significant losses for many. I have been in contact with the Additional District Magistrate, and once a thorough assessment is conducted, we can ascertain the accurate extent of the losses. The timely arrival of the fire tenders played a crucial role in containing the fire and preventing further escalation. Our government officials are actively investigating the matter and exploring avenues to assist those affected. I have also coordinated with the Mayor to ensure immediate support for the victims, and our government is exploring all possible means to provide assistance."
