Guwahati: Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) is set to produce marketable grade green activated carbon from bamboo dust.
The MoU was signed by representative Nikunja Borthakur, Senior Chief General Manager (Corporate Affairs) of NRL and Professor G Krishnamoorthy, Dean of the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG) on Thursday, with an aim to collaborate on the development of technology for producing green grade carbon from bamboo dust.
This collaboration is set to be an industry-academia partnership, with the two entities sharing data and information to enhance each other's capabilities and expertise to develop innovative solutions and technologies for sustainable resource utilization and industrial applications.
The bamboo dust will be a byproduct generated during the preparation of bamboo chips for NRL's 2nd Generation Biorefinery, which is being set up in partnership with Assam Bio-Refinery Private Limited.
The project involves establishing a plant with a capacity of 5 metric tons per batch to produce green activated carbon by pyrolyzing bamboo dust. Pyrolysis is a process of heating organic material in the absence of oxygen to break it down into useful products like activated carbon.
However, the focus of this research and development project goes beyond just producing activated carbon; it also aims to develop technology for producing high-grade chemically activated carbon.
