Guwahati: In a significant push towards the 'Digital India' vision, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has introduced QR code machines at booking counters across its network to facilitate cashless transactions. A total of 191 QR code machines have been installed at 422 locations spanning five divisions—Katihar, Rangiya, Alipurduar, Lumding, and Tinsukia—covering 587 counters to date.

NFR officials have announced that 189 additional QR code machines are in the advanced stages of procurement and will soon be installed at selected stations. Major stations already equipped with QR code machines include Guwahati, Kamakhya, New Jalpaiguri, Rangiya, New Tinsukia, Katihar, New Bongaigaon, Goalpara Town, Darjeeling, Kishanganj, New Coochbehar, Ghum, among others.

The QR code-based ticketing system allows passengers to book tickets through various digital platforms and scan the QR code at stations to obtain their tickets without the need for physical interaction. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce queues at ticket counters, minimize cash usage, and ensure a faster and more secure ticketing process.

The introduction of QR code machines marks another milestone in NFR’s efforts to modernize services and enhance passenger convenience. By adopting innovative technologies, NFR aims to make train travel easier and safer for passengers.

Previously, NFR had implemented a mobile app-based ticketing system through the unreserved ticketing system (UTS) app, enabling passengers to book unreserved tickets from the comfort of their homes.

As part of the ‘Digital India’ initiative, which promotes contactless ticketing, cashless transactions, and enhanced customer convenience, NFR urges all rail users to utilize these cashless ticketing facilities and actively participate in Indian Railways' digital transformation.
