Kohima: Nagaland's Department of Transport on May 28 inaugurated the Nirbhaya VLTS Command & Control Centre in the transport commissionerate of Kohima to increase passenger safety, officials said.

During the inaugural ceremony, Commissioner & Secretary of Transport, Zasekuolie Chusi, explained that the scheme entails the development, customization, deployment, and management of a state-wise tracking platform for safety and enforcement, in accordance with AIS 140 specifications.

He further stated that the Vehicle Location Tracking Device (VLTD) will be mandatory for all public transport vehicles registered before or after January 1, 2019. These devices, equipped with a unique ID and panic button, will be integrated with the Vahan database and monitored in a 24x7 Command-and-Control Centre. "This Centre will serve as a vital interface linking vehicles, police control rooms, and related enforcement and emergency units in a real-time data-sharing network", he said.

Travellers can activate the panic button during emergencies, triggering distress messages to the command-and-control centre. The centre will promptly alert police and other stakeholders to address the situation, ensuring swift assistance.

Chusi stressed the importance of the system in ensuring the safety of women, children, and other vulnerable passengers and urged collective action from the department, stakeholders, and the public "to fully utilise the device for maximum advantage."

Transport Commissioner Elias T. Lotha provided an overview of the Nirbhaya VLTS Project, which was initiated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH).
