Guwahati: The National Centre of Excellence for Badminton will provide critical impetus to training and talent development for badminton, said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on the inauguration on Friday.
Sarma on Friday inaugurated the National Centre of Excellence for badminton at Amingaon in Guwahati. The MoU was signed between BAI and the Government of Assam.
He also laid the foundation of Amingaon Sports Complex involving a financial outlay of Rs 320 crore at Amingaon.
The National Centre of Excellence for Badminton is sprawled across a vast area of 40,000 square feet and boasts cutting-edge amenities. It features 16 badminton courts, seating for 3,553 spectators, a hostel for players, and living quarters for coaches.
Sarma emphasised that this facility would play a pivotal role in nurturing badminton talent through advanced training programmes.
He also highlighted the proposed games village within the Amingaon Sports Complex, which aims to provide comprehensive facilities for players. The Chief Minister also expressed the state government's aspiration to host the National Games in either 2025 or 2027.
In addition to the badminton centre, Sarma announced plans for the renovation of the Nehru Stadium to incorporate modern amenities. This renovation project, with a budget of Rs. 500 crore, aims to enhance the stadium's capacity to accommodate 50,000 spectators.
Another stadium is set to be constructed in Chandrapur, and an Olympic standard swimming pool is currently under construction at Amingaon, which will offer top-tier swimming facilities to athletes.
