New dams in Darang district this year: Assam Minister

Guwahati: Assam Water Resources, Information and Public Relations Minister Pijush Hazarika, who visited Darang district and chaired a review meeting on the flood situation, promised that the state government would build dam infrastructure to save the region from floods.

Hazarika made the statement after he took stock of the situation from MP Dilip Shaikia, MLAs, and heads of various departments. The meeting discussed important issues and adopted a proposal to construct 26 km of new dams in the district to strengthen the flood control system. The dam will be constructed, along with a 6 km new dam along the Brahmaputra river from Chereng to Rangamati-Kurua. 

The dam is expected to protect Assam Skill University premises and the proposed Darang Medical College site. The minister also visited the main road connecting Gerimari to Gerimari 1 area and the flood site caused by the Bega River, ensuring the safety of the residents. 

He directed the departmental authorities to complete road repair work as soon as possible.
