Guwahati: The Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra is all set to unveil a dedicated museum honouring the iconic music maestro cum activist Bhupen Hazarika in a significant boost to Assam’s cultural and tourism sectors. The initiative aims to celebrate the iconic musician’s legacy while driving local economic growth and enhancing tourism in the Northeast.
In an exclusive conversation with Business North East (BNE), Sudarshan Thakur, the Secretary of Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, spoke of the ambitious plans related to the cultural institution in the Panjabari area of Guwahati, emphasizing its potential to attract a wider audience and bolster Assam’s cultural tourism.
The proposed museum will chronicle Bhupen Hazarika’s life and work, offering an immersive experience for visitors through curated exhibits, memorabilia, and multimedia displays. “This museum will be a fitting tribute to one of Assam’s greatest cultural icons and will indirectly contribute to boosting the local economy and tourism,” the Secretary stated.
Kalakshetra is also expanding its infrastructure to accommodate more events and visitors. The Srimanta Sankardev International Auditorium Complex currently houses two auditoriums with seating capacities of 1,250 and 300, respectively. A new 800-seat auditorium is under construction, expected to host various government and non-government programs upon completion.
