New Delhi: The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) has achieved a significant milestone by securing the prestigious Oeko-Tex certification for its Eri Silk. This certification, granted from Germany on India's 78th Independence Day, highlights the region's craftsmanship and elevates Eri Silk as a globally recognized sustainable textile.

Eri Silk is celebrated as the world's only vegan silk due to its ethical production process. Unlike conventional silk production that involves killing the moth inside the cocoon, Eri Silk allows the moth to exit naturally, preserving the cocoon for use. This eco-friendly approach makes Eri Silk a symbol of sustainability in the textile industry.

The Oeko-Tex certification is known for its stringent standards ensuring textiles are free from harmful substances and produced under environmentally friendly conditions. This endorsement is crucial for Eri Silk, which is also recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Assam, highlighting its authenticity and regional importance.

This achievement marks a significant stride towards introducing Eri Silk to international markets, expanding its global footprint, and showcasing Northeast India's potential in the textile sector. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia congratulated the NEHHDC team on Twitter, acknowledging this milestone in promoting Assam's cultural heritage through sustainable practices.
