Longleng: A four-day capacity-building program on meat production was held at the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services in Longleng, Nagaland, on Wednesday. The training program was implemented by the chief veterinary office with technical assistance from the KVK Longleng, officials said.
Dr. Hari Charan Kalita, senior scientist and head, highlighted the importance of hygienic meat production, preservation, and value addition as a potential socio-economic income.
Dr. Aoyimsen Jamir, a veterinary surgeon who was also present, emphasized the importance of clean and hygienic meat production from farm to consumer's table. The training covered care, management, slaughter, and processing of meat for table purposes. He warned trainees that meat is a vital source of protein for nutrition but can also spread parasitic, bacterial, and viral diseases if not properly processed. He also advised pig owners to avoid discarding leftover food to pig feed, especially after consuming pork curry.
Dr. Lily Ngullie, SMS (Animal Science), shared a few thoughts on the care and management of pigs and poultry in Longleng district and meat-borne parasitic and zoonotic diseases. Dr. Mophe B. Phom, VAS (MVU), presented on the prevention and control of common livestock and poultry diseases in Longleng district.
