Guwahati: Amul milk, which is a household name in India, has increased its price by Rs 2 per litre from Monday across all variants sold in markets nationwide.

As per reports, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which sells its dairy products under the brandname, said that the increase of Rs 2 per litre translates to the range of 3-4 per cent increase in MRP which is much lower than the average food inflation. It further added that this price hike is being implemented due to the increase in the overall cost of operation and production of milk.

With the fresh hike, the revised milk prices for variants such as 500 ml Amul buffalo milk, 500 ml Amul Gold milk, and 500 ml Amul Shakti milk stand at Rs 36, Rs 33, and Rs 30, respectively. Meanwhile, the price of the curd has also increased.

According to GCMMF, Amul as a policy passes on almost 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for milk and milk products to milk producers.

Meanwhile, the Brihattar Guwahati Gou Palak Sangstha in Guwahati, Assam has raised the wholesale price of milk by Rs 5 per litre starting from Saturday, adding to the already high prices of vegetables, fuel, LPG cylinders, and other essential commodities. The new wholesale price of milk will be Rs 62, while the retail price in city markets will be around Rs 75 per litre.

According to Dibakar Dhakal, the working president of the Gou Palak Sangstha, the decision to increase the price was necessary due to the significant rise in input costs for milk production. "Starting from the prices of cattle fodder to medicines, labour costs everything has gone up, which has made it difficult for them to sell milk at the previous price. Prices of wheat choker, maze, and broken rice which are essential feed for cattle, have skyrocketed", he noted to media.
