Shillong: Comingone Ymbon, The Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister, chaired a meeting of the State Consumer Protection Council in Shillong. Officials said the meeting aimed to assess various "initiatives by the department, including the Price Monitoring System (PMS) and the Price Monitoring Vigilance Committee."

Through the price monitoring system, the Meghalaya government controls the pricing of several essential items to curb price rise in the state. "The meeting also discussed the illegal smuggling of sugar along the Indo-Bangladesh border, urging all districts and sub-divisions to coordinate with the Border Security Force (BSF) and relevant departments to prevent such activities and prevent sugar inflation", officials said, adding that "the meeting also discussed the issue of fortified rice and suggested regular inspection of petrol pumps for complaints against fuel adulteration."

The Minister urged officials to have a robust mechanism for conducting consumer awareness programs and sensitization on consumer rights at the district and state level. He also instructed district-level Self Help Groups to spread awareness to the people at the grassroot level.
