Kuala Lumpur: As per reports, Malaysia Airlines is planning to expand its reach in India by increasing flights to more non-metro cities, along with boosting the frequency of services to Ahmedabad and Trivandrum, a senior airline official announced on Friday.

Currently, the airline, which is part of the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), operates 71 weekly flights to nine Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Amritsar, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kochi.

Dersenish Aresandiran, Chief Commercial Officer of Airline Business at MAG, stated that the airline is looking to increase its flight frequency to Ahmedabad and Trivandrum. Additionally, Malaysia Airlines intends to expand its services to non-metro cities in India, where it faces fewer restrictions due to the bilateral flying rights agreement between the two countries. This agreement limits the number of seats on flights to metro cities but allows more flexibility for non-metro routes.

In August, the airline increased its Amritsar services from four weekly flights to daily operations. Currently, it runs four flights a week to both Ahmedabad and Trivandrum.

Despite Malaysia Airlines’ recent announcement of a temporary reduction in its global network due to supply chain and manpower challenges, Group Managing Director of MAG, Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, confirmed that the impact on its India operations would be minimal.

In another development, the airline revealed plans to launch a new route from Kuala Lumpur to Paris, starting March 22, 2025.

MAG comprises three core businesses: airlines, loyalty and travel solutions, and aviation services. Under the airline segment, it operates Malaysia Airlines, regional carriers Firefly and MASwings, and AMAL, which provides services for Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages.
