Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called for a professional approach or ecosystem in the animal husbandry sector to make the state self-reliant in production.
Speaking at the platinum jubilee celebration of Assam Agricultural University, Guwahati, Sarma said, “Assam faces challenges in meeting its demand for eggs and meat. While the state requires around 57-58 lakh eggs daily, it produces only 40 lakh eggs, leading to a deficit of 52 lakh eggs.”
The chief minister suggested adopting a professional and ecosystem-based approach in the animal sector which involves using scientific advancements and modern technologies to improve production and efficiency.
Sarma mentioned that institutions like Assam Veterinary Science College have not only benefited Assam but also other northeastern states. These institutions have improved the quality of life for farmers and played a significant role in poverty alleviation through skill development and knowledge dissemination.
It is expected that “our country’s milk production by 2030 will touch 267 million litres. As such it is imperative to take a 7% growth in milk production every year”, he said, adding, “To keep pace with the national production level, it is necessary to put a maximum impetus on increasing the milk production of Assam by scientific and modern technology.”
