Guwahati: The festive spirit in Guwahati soared to new heights during this year's Durga Puja celebrations as the Excise Department unveiled staggering statistics regarding the city's alcohol consumption. In just three days of festivities, from October 22 to October 24, Guwahati witnessed a surge in demand for alcoholic beverages, with sales reaching a whopping Rs 22.05 crore.
The Excise Department's reports say that the city has seen a significant surge in alcohol consumption during this festive period.
In 2022, despite the two dry days, Guwahati recorded liquor sales of Rs 29 crore during the three days of October 1, 3, and 4. Rs 17 crore worth of liquor was sold during the same period, with a sale of Rs 6.75 crore on October 1, Rs 5 crore on October 3, and Rs 5.25 crore on October 4, 2022.
A week before the durga puja, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at a press meet said that, no dry day will be imposed during the puja this year. As imposing "dry days" during the Durga Puja celebrations might inadvertently give rise to black market activities.
