Guwahati: Assam tea is known for its boldness and robustness, with classic malt and woody astringency flavors. The tea grown in the Gatoonga Tea Estate, located some 18km from Jorhat town, is developing a reputation for its high quality and distinct taste far and wide.
Speaking to Business North East, B&A Limited Managing Director Somnath Chatterjee informed that the tea is in very high demand across India. "We have received appreciation from as far away as Germany", he said. "However, there are no plans for exporting yet." Last week, the Gatoonga black tea was launched amid much fanfare at the Gauhati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) in Assam's capital Dispur.
Black tea is a type of tea that is more oxidized than oolong, yellow, white, and green teas. The health benefits of black tea include protecting the heart, lowering cancer risk, and reducing the risk of diabetes.
Gatoonga is owned by B&A Limited, a single-origin tea producer. The tea will be available in Jorhat, Balasore, Orrisa, Calcutta, and Guwahati. "The price of 250 grams of the tea will be Rs 200", Chatterjee informed Business North East.
The Gatoonga tea estate, located in Jorhat, has a gross area of 621.10 and has been selling tea in auctions since 1951. "The area under tea is 261.97. As far as crop production is concerned, we had 404,916kg in 2019, 338,798kg in 2020, and 297,813kg in 2021", Chatterjee said.
The Gatoonga Tea Garden in Assam, a member of B&A Limited, has been selling tea in auctions since 1951 and received an average of Rs 401.15 in 2022-23 auctions. The company produces around 7.5 million kg of tea per annum and has been accepted by buyers as a quality Crush, Tear, Curl (CTC) tea producer.
