Shillong: The PM POSHAN Scheme, a school meal program sponsored by the centre, aims to improve the nutritional status of school-going children nationwide. The scheme provides utensils and all requirements for providing and serving one cooked meal per child per day, but students can also carry empty tiffin boxes from home instead of being served on plates provided by the schools.
The best practice of using tiffin boxes, adopted in most schools in Meghalaya, plays a vital role in the serving of mid-day meals under the PM POSHAN Scheme. So how does it work?
Children entitled to PM POSHAN meals can bring an empty tiffin box from home and hand it over to the cook-cum-helpers in the morning. The cook-cum-helpers pack the hot cooked meal into these tiffin boxes after preparation, as per the government's norms.
During recess, students receive their packed tiffin boxes back and enjoy their meals. The empty boxes are kept with them and carried home after school, reducing the amount of water needed to wash plates, improving hygiene, and shortening the time needed to serve meals.
This method ensures that students receive meals according to the food norms provided by the government and allows uniform serving of meals to school-children.
