Guwahati: An Indian farmer has ventured into cultivating Japan's famed Miyazaki mangoes, renowned as one of the world's most expensive fruits, reports said. While traditional mangoes typically cost between Rs 100 to Rs 200 per kilogram, Miyazaki mangoes command an astonishing price of Rs 2.5 lakh per kilogram in the international market.

Bhoi, a farmer from eastern India's Odisha, said he has cultivated the expensive Miyazaki mangoes in his orchard in Kalahandi district, according to ANI. Bhoi, who grows several varieties of the fruit on his farm, told the agency that he sourced its seed through the state horticulture department.

The development has been reported amidst sweltering summer temperatures as mangoes flood the markets. The 'National Horticulture Board estimates over 1,500 unique types of the fruit are grown in the country.

Originating in Japan, Miyazaki mangoes captivate with their crimson or violet hues, enticing fragrance, and succulent flesh. Miyazaki mangoes find their roots in Miyazaki city, Japan, renowned for its balmy climate ideal for fruit cultivation. This rare breed was first introduced in 1984, initially cultivated in small, eight-unit farms. Over time, advanced techniques have refined the production process, enhancing the fruit's allure.

While primarily associated with Japan, some farms in India have embraced its cultivation. These fruits took center stage in a mango festival in Siliguri and Raipur last year. Alongside Miyazaki mangoes, Miyazaki city yields an assortment of fruits, including Hyuganatsu, Kinkan (kumquat), and lychee, contributing to its reputation as a horticultural haven.
