Guwahati: Ruhul Amin, Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Guwahati, said that the victory day of Bangladesh is testimony to the close ties between Bangladesh and India and trade between the neighbours is expected to soar to new heights in the years ahead.

“Both Bangladesh and India are growing very fast in terms of economic growth. We have to forge new partnerships and collaborations in the economic sector”, Amin said, asserting that annual trade between India and Bangladesh has surged to 18 billion dollars. “The trade could grow beyond $50 billion”, Amin asserted.

Amin said that Bangladesh wishes to utilize the “excellent relationship” it has with India for the betterment of the people “which will be good for the business community of both countries.”

The Assistant High Commission’s office of Bangladesh organized the 53rd Victory Day of the 1971 war here on December 16. The programme was hosted by Amin and his spouse Nobonita Hoque.

Bimal Bora, Assam’s minister of industries and commerce, was invited as the chief guest of the event.

Speaking to the media, Bora said, “On this day, the people of Bangladesh planned the creation of a new nation. The role of Mukti Bahini freedom fighters in making the nationhood successful cannot be overstated. During this struggle, an army from India also helped Bangladesh to achieve their freedom.”

According to Bora, the Indian government has inked various agreements to promote the economy of the nation. “Based on [Act East Policy], the products produced in the country can be sent to neighboring countries, like Bangladesh”, Bora said. “With such efforts, there is a scope to enhance the entrepreneurial scope of the state and region.”

The minister emphasized the role of waterways in fostering better ties with neighbouring Bangladesh. “If we want to connect to the world, it is important that we have a good connectivity through waterways,” underscored Bora.

The Chief Minister of Assam has “high hopes” to improve the industrial scenario of the state and has taken many important steps in that regard, Bora added. “As production increases due to high-end industrialization, the market will also grow bigger. So, the neighboring countries will be potential markets for the state”, said the Minister.

When Business North East asked the minister what the state government is doing to encourage businesses from Assam to invest in Bangladesh, he replied, “Based on the Act East policy, the state has developed trade relations with many neighboring countries. Based on the foreign policy, export-import and investment possibilities are being discussed. The Prime Minister and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have always encouraged such initiatives.”
