Guwahati: The Indian Chamber of Commerce, Northeast region, organised an event aimed at empowering the workforce and fostering entrepreneurship by providing strategic insights on labour welfare, skill development, and economic growth. The "Guest of the Month" event featured a keynote address by B. Kalyan Chakravarthy, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary – Labour & Welfare, Skill Development, Employment & Entrepreneurship, Government of Assam.

Chakravarthy highlighted key reforms and ongoing initiatives by the Assam government to improve the business environment. He emphasised the importance of creating a skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of emerging sectors such as manufacturing, IT, and services while also encouraging private-sector partnerships to drive innovation and growth. He further underscored the critical role that skill development plays in boosting Assam's economy to elevate the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) from Rs 68.7 billion to Rs 143 billion.

During an exclusive interaction with Business North East (BNE), Chakravarthy stated, "The interaction between the entrepreneurs was a great experience. I tried to understand their issues, growth potential, and the utilisation of government funds or schemes. The gig economy makes a significant contribution to society; people work as freelancers rather than in traditional organisations. Essentially, the 30-35 age group represents the lower tier, 40-45 the middle tier, and 20-25 the higher tier within the gig economy. While employees in organisations typically receive benefits such as EPFO and ESIC, the gig economy does not necessitate all of these."

"The innovative and fresh ideas being brought by young entrepreneurs are a great contribution to both the organisation and the region. We must strive to become more effective, think faster, and continue to grow," he added.
