Kohima: In the SDG India Index 2023-24, released by the NITI Aayog on July 9, Nagaland, has ranked 25th, and has improved its overall composite score from 61 in 2020-21 to 63 in 2023-24. The state ranks 1st in SDG 5 (Gender Equality), is Frontrunner in 6 goals, Performer in 7 goals, and Aspirant in 2 goals.

The rankings measure the progress of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among 36 Indian states and Union Territories (UTs).

The state government said in a release, "The state has been working on improving monitoring processes, tracking SDG indicators, capacity building in data systems, and strengthening internal review mechanisms. However, the heavy reliance on secondary data in the report and lack of consultation with the State Government have made this endeavor challenging. The State Government is taking up these matters, emphasizing the need for more rigor in SDG Monitoring."

The state's performance in different performance categories includes Frontrunner SDGs (Gender Equality, Clean Water and Sanitation, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Climate Action, Life on Land, Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions), Performer SDGs (No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health & Well Being), Affordable & Clean Energy, Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure, Reduced Inequality, Sustainable Consumption and Production), and Aspirant SDGs (Quality Education, Sustainable Cities and Communities).

Nagaland and Lakshadweep have achieved targets for pregnant women who are anemic at 22.2 percent, frontrunner SDGs (No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health & Well Being), 100 percent improvement in drinking water sources, household electrification, Frontrunner SDGs (Labour Force Participation Rate, PMJDY), Biomedical Waste treatment, and industries complying with environmental standards.
